The Duchess of Cambridge & Tom Walker - 'For Those Who Can't Be Here' @ Westminster Abbey 2022
The last speech given by Catherine Princess of Wales
"Christmas is a time when we come together and celebrate the birth of a newborn baby," the Princess said. "The arrival of every baby is a precious and momentous time, it brings us together to reflect on new beginnings and brings hope for the future. Throughout our earliest interactions, relationships and experiences, with those who love us, even before we are born, we lay the foundations to so much of what that future will depend on. But only by valuing and supporting the vital role of the adults in a child's world can we hope to make a difference."
Kate went on to explain that the 1,500 guests at Royal Carols: Together at Christmas were invited in recognition of their support of children. They included parents and carers, educators, midwives, health visitors and volunteers.
“Thank you for all you do in helping the very youngest members of our communities, feel safe, valued and loved,” Kate said. "This is not just making a difference to children today, it will go on to shape a happier, healthier, fairer world in the future.”
The Princess of Wales has made the early years a key focus of her work for more than a decade. However, her comments on new life will also resonate on a personal level for her family this year. Kate's younger brother James Middleton welcomed a son with wife Alizee Thevenet in October.
This was the third year that Kate has hosted the carol concert at Westminster Abbey. When she began the tradition in 2021, she surprised everyone by showing off her piano-playing skills accompanying singer Tom Walker in a rendition of his Christmas single.
The 2023 service, held on Friday December 8, featured a performance by Jacob Collier of Last Christmas played on John Lennon’s piano as well as a duet from Beverley Knight and Adam Lambert. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis all attended with their parents. A few days later, a video of the royal children helping out at a baby bank ahead of Christmas was also released.
William, Kate and their children will spend the holidays at their country home Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate. The royal family will walk to church on Christmas morning and greet the public before having lunch privately. This year, Queen Camilla’s children and grandchildren are expected to be part of the festivities.
Royal Carols: Together at Christmas airs in the UK on Christmas Eve at 7:45 p.m. on ITV1 and ITVX. It's as yet unclear if it will be available to view in the U.S.
